At its February 10, 2004 meeting, the PTA unanimously passed the following resolution on school closures in Oakland:

The Anthony Chabot PTA calls on Dr. Ward, State Administrator of OUSD, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell to delay any decision regarding school closures.We support the public position of our legislators Senator Don Perata and Assemblymember Wilma Chan to delay any decision in order to allow the District to complete a careful study of the impacts of school closures on the OUSD budget, the affected students, families and staff, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

If the conclusion of such an analysis is that school closures are warranted as part of an overall fiscal recovery plan, the District should engage in a thoughtful process that is open to the public to determine where, when and how school closures should occur.
