Instrumental Music at Chabot

Chabot’s fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in the Oakland Unified School District’s instrumental music program. From absolute beginners to more experienced musicians, students learn to play and perform for the Chabot community. Beginning students can choose a wind, string or brass instrument to learn; students with some musical training can choose to play their instrument or learn a new one. All receive individual attention from teacher Claudia McCarthy and learn to play solo and as an ensemble with their fellow-students.

In the 2001-2002 school year, two Chabot students – both of whom began playing their instruments in the Chabot instrumental music program – were award-winners in the OUSD Solo and Ensemble competition.

This year’s Oakland Unified School District Solo and Ensemble Festival will take place during the week of April 7. The Chabot instrumental music concert will take place in May.
