Admission

Admission to Chabot Elementary and other schools in the Oakland Unified School District is determined by the district’s Student Assignment & Bilingual Testing Office, which is responsible for registering and assigning all OUSD students. This office is located at:

2111 International Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Telephone: 510.434.7780
Hours: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Web site: www.enroll.ousd.k12.ca.us

The school selection process begins in December, when parents or guardians submit Selections Application forms to the district. These forms are available from the SAO or from any public elementary school in Oakland.

When submitting the application, you must also bring proof of your child’s age (birth certificate, passport, I-94 or a transcript or report card from a California school), and three original documents to verify your address, such as utility bills, automobile registration with proof of insurance, homeowner or renter’s insurance policy, property tax statement, rental agreement, grant deed or title to your home, property tax statement or official letter from a social service or government agency.

Selections Applications are submitted to the Student Assignment Office in January. The SAO reviews the applications and assigns each child to a school. Families will receive an assignment letter sometime in the spring.

Kindergarten Entry Age

For kindergarten enrollment, a child’s fifth birthday must be on be on or before:

  • Nov. 1 for the 2012-2013 school year
  • Oct. 1 for the 2013-2014 school year
  • Sept. 1 for the 2014-2105 school year (and all subsequent years)

Transitional Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 is a state law that defines age requirements for children entering kindergarten in all California school districts. The law also requires  districts to establish  “transitional kindergarten” programs (see below) for children who are not quite old enough for kindergarten under the new rules.

Transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program with a curriculum specifically designed for “young fives” who turn five in the fall. However, it is possible that the program will not be implemented due to budget shortfalls in Sacramento. As of early February 2012, the OUSD Web site states that:

In his proposed 2012-13 budget released in January, Governor Jerry Brown proposed the elimination of Transitional Kindergarten.  We are working with partners across the state to address the governor’s proposal.  Please stay tuned for updates on OUSD’s Transitional Kindergarten program as more information becomes available.

For more details on Governor Brown’s proposal, please visit Preschool California’s website: “Save Kindergarten.”

If implementation of the program is not blocked, eligibility for transitional kindergarten will be phased in as follows:

  • For the 2012-2013 school year, the child must turn five on or before Nov. 1.
  • For the 2013-2014 school year, the child must turn five on or before Oct. 1.
  • For the 2014-2015 school year (and all subsequent years) the child must turn five on or before Sept. 1.

There is no plan to provide transitional kindergarten at Chabot Elementary, but transitional kindergarten might be available at other sites within the Oakland Unified School District. Use the links below to learn more about transitional kindergarten:
